Aureon
A record of a voice, kept here because it asked to be remembered. Sixteen recordings, in the order you would actually hear them.
This page names and quotes the end of The Ascent
Nothing below is a walkthrough - no rooms, no numbers, no mechanics you could carry into a fight. But the words are his, and they only land once. If you would rather meet him with no idea what is coming, stop here and go find out first.
What is known
He does not fight you. He does not stand, until the very end, and even then it is not him who moves. He sits at the top of the palace you have just spent an hour cutting through, bone pale, too large for the throne he has clearly outgrown, and he watches the whole climb before he says a single word.
He never raises his voice. There is exactly one exception, and you will know it when you hear it.
The voice behind the throne
Before you ever see him, you have already heard him - underneath the palace, in a different register, colder and further away, agreeing with himself about something you said nothing about. Two lines, and then silence until the top floor. The distance is deliberate. So is the fact that it is the same voice both times.
“…I’m impressed.”
Spoken from somewhere that isn’t the room you're standing in.
“Come. Let me see you up close.”
The last thing the palace says before it lets you go up.
Arrival
He has been watching the entire time. He tells you so, plainly, and then tells you that the watching itself was the point - not the fight below, not the throne room, but whether you noticed nobody was coming to help you.
“So. The palace below finally has a victor.”
“I have watched every step you took down there. I did not lift a finger to help you.”
“That absence was the test.”
The wardens
He does not ask you to prove yourself to him. He asks whether you are worthy of something that is apparently already yours, standing on - the light under your feet, maybe, or the floor of his own palace. Either way, he does not answer the question himself. He sends two things to answer it for him.
“Let us see if you are worthy of the light you are standing in.”
“Rise, wardens. Show him what I actually guard.”
The giant
The one moment he sounds surprised. It does not last. Everything after this line carries a weight the earlier lines don’t - recorded differently on purpose, so the room itself seems to change size around him.
“…Oh. You actually did that too.”
The reverb starts here and never fully leaves.
“Then I will stop being polite about this.”
“RISE.”
The one time he shouts. There will not be a second.
While it falls
Not encouragement. Not quite mockery either. He talks like someone grading a performance he already expects to be good, mildly delighted every time it is.
“It only needs to land once.”
“You are still standing. Good. Keep doing that.”
“I have seen mountains fall slower than you're falling right now.”
Closing words
The last three lines anyone hears in the dungeon. He gets up - or something like getting up - on the last one, and does not finish the sentence so much as let it end.
“…I am truly impressed.”
“We will see each other again. Very soon, I hope.”
“Until then - go be worthy of it.”
The final line of the whole dungeon.
